Isopropanol: Uses and Synthesis Methods
Isopropyl alcohol, also known as fire alcohol, dimethyl carbinol, 2-propanol, and isopropyl alcohol in English, is the simplest secondary alcohol and one of the isomers of n-propanol. It is a colorless, flammable liquid with a strong odor, resembling a mixture of ethanol and acetone, but its odor is not strong. It is soluble in water, alcohols, ethers, benzene, chloroform, and most organic solvents, and is miscible with water, alcohols, and ethers, forming azeotropes with water. Its density (specific gravity) is 0.7863g/cm3, melting point (Chemicalbook) is -88.5℃, boiling point is 82.5℃, flash point is 11.7℃, and autoignition point is 460℃. Its vapor can cause mild irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat; it can be absorbed by the human body through the skin. Its vapor can form explosive mixtures with air. The explosion limit is 2.0% to 12% (by volume). It is classified as a medium explosion hazard substance and is a flammable and low-toxic substance. The toxicity of its vapor is twice that of ethanol, but the toxicity when ingested is opposite
